Help:Uploading images
From Scramble - The Aviation Magazine
Contents |
Introduction
It is possible to upload your photographs or other images to Scramble's Aviation Wiki to help decorate your Articles.
Although we encourage you to share your photographs with the rest of the community, this Wiki is not a showcase of your artistic products. Therefore this Wiki is not an alternative to airliners.net, jetphotos.net, myaviation.net or other such much better suited Internet sites. Excessive uploading is therefore discouraged and in extreme cases images will be deleted again by the Admin team!
How to upload an image
To upload an image to Scramble's Aviation Wiki simply click here. Just follow the instructions on that page, taking into account the following issues:
Naming your image
Think carefully about how you name your image:
- Try to name your image so that there is a reference to the content (like 'Ka-50_cn_painted_on.jpg' instead of 'img3244.jpg').
- Check that no other image with the same name has already been uploaded.
- A search of previously uploaded images can be carried out here.
What to upload
- Your own images or images which are in the Public Domain.
- Images that are aviation related.
- Currently only the following file types can be uploaded:
- gif.
- jpg/jpeg.
- png.
What not to upload
- COPYRIGHTED IMAGES (WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION).
Please remember images on the Scramble site, outside of this Wiki, are still copyrighted! - Images with large file sizes. Usually images with a width of at most 700 pixels are sufficient.
What Licence to use
On the Upload Page you will find several predefined Copyright Licences which you can use. Use the one which best suits your personal wishes. When no Licence is declared, it will automatically be assumed it comes under the same Licence as the remainder of Scramble's Aviation Wiki (Creative Commons Deeds BY-NC-SA version 2.5 Licence).
Just include the template for the appropriate Licence in the Summary box, like "by-nc-sa".
Please note that while technically possible it is legally not allowed to change this afterwards, at least not to a more restrictive licence.
Summary
In the Summary box you can give a short summary on the image, like type of aircraft, place and date taken, registration etc. And off course the Licence Template has to be included here.
When it concerns an image taken from the Public Domain, please also include a link to the site where the image was taken from. When none is given it may be deleted by the Admin team again.
Linking an image
After you have uploaded your image, it is fairly easy to include it in your Article, just include a in your Article.
This will put the image straight after the last text 'somewhere' on the page. However, it is better to define exactly how you want the image to be positioned, like the examples below.
- To link to the image description page, without showing the actual image, use :Image:Yourimage.gif, giving Image:Yourimage.gif (the first colon is not displayed).
Image at the left
puts the image at the left and text that follows floats to the right of it:
xxxxxxxx
puts the image at the left and text that follows starts below it:
Image at the right
puts the image at the right and text that follows floats to the left of it:
xxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxx
Image with caption
To use an uploaded image with a caption, inside a frame with a different background colour, use
Not using the 'frame' will display the image, but the caption text will only be used as the 'ALT'-text, e.g. only showing when you move your mouse over it.
Thumbnail image
The image option above (framed with a caption text) uses the image as it was uploaded to the Wiki, eg. it does not re-size the image. If you plan to include multiple images in your article, you can also make use of Thumbnails. This will display an image re-sized to the size you specify, and when clicked, will take you to the version as it was uploaded. This can be achieved by using . This will display your image with a width of 150 pixels, on the left side of the page. If you plan to make use of more than one image, make sure you use left in every image link, because that will make sure they line up next to each other, instead of in a column.
Galleries
In some cases, where you have several images, for instance in the "images" section of an aircraft type, you can use the <gallery>-tag;
<gallery>
Image:Yourimage.jpg|caption text
Image:Yourimage2.jpg|caption text two with wiki-link
Image:Yourimage3.jpg
</gallery>
Produces something like;
Caption about this photo which is used on the page about the Panavia Tornado. |
|||
Just make sure you put every single image on a new line.
Using this tag will show the images as thumbnails, arranged in four columns, all 'cells' having the same size.
The advantage of using this tag is that all images and eventual caption text will be nicely aligned and you do not have to worry about inserting enough empty lines after the images as with the previous example.
